Mermode is a sculptural dress born from the intersection of marine mythology and sustainability. Inspired by the figure of the mermaid — a symbol of transformation, allure, and solitude — it represents a creature rising from the depths, not adorned with pearls and shells, but shaped by the remnants of modern society: discarded, forgotten materials reimagined into something new.
The piece was selected as an international finalist at Junk Kouture 2024, standing out for its strong conceptual narrative and original use of reclaimed elements. Entirely made from recycled materials, it features mussel and razor clam shells that form a natural armor across the body, alongside long sequins cut from plastic bottles, reflecting light with a fluid, iridescent movement. The structure is completed with scraps from refrigerator parts, repurposed and hand-assembled to create unexpected volume and contrast.
Mermode is a visual reflection on the relationship between body, environment, and consumption. It is not just a garment, but a creative statement that gives new dignity and beauty to what has been thrown away. In a world that produces too much and preserves too little, Mermode invites us to reconsider what we define as waste — and to imagine its second life.
